Set a minimum or maximum order

Require a minimum number of items or order value before shoppers can pay, or cap how large an order can be.

Order rules decide what a cart needs before a shopper can pay. Use them when you only ship full cases, when small orders cost you more to pack than they earn, or when you want to cap very large orders.

For example, a drinks shop can ask for at least 16 bottles in any mix of flavours. Shoppers fill their cart as usual, and checkout tells them how many more they need.

Set your order rules

Open Settings → Checkout and find the Order rules card. Every field is optional, so set only the limits you need and leave the rest empty.

SettingWhat it limits
Number of itemsThe fewest and the most items a cart may hold. Every item counts, in any mix of products.
Order valueThe lowest and the highest cart subtotal, set separately for each currency your store sells in.

Save the card, and the rules apply to new checkouts straight away.

Tip: Do it with AI. Ask the AI Assistant to "require at least 16 items per order" or "set a minimum order of 50 EUR".

How items are counted

The item count is the total quantity in the cart. Three bottles of one flavour and two of another make five items. A bundle counts as one item, however many products it contains.

How order value is measured

Order value is the cart subtotal before coupons and without delivery. The card shows which kind of subtotal your store uses:

  • Order value (incl. tax) when your prices include tax,
  • Order value (excl. tax) when tax is added at checkout.

Each currency has its own amount, and amounts are never converted. If you sell in EUR and PLN and set a minimum only in EUR, carts in PLN have no order value limit. The card lists the currencies that have none.

What shoppers see

Shoppers can always add products to their cart, so they can build up to a valid order. When a cart breaks a rule, checkout shows what to change instead of the payment form, for example:

  • To place an order, your cart must contain at least 16 items. Add 4 more.
  • To place an order, your cart total must be at least €50.00. Add €12.50 more.

The message follows the shopper's language. Every payment method checks the rules, so a shopper can't get around them by opening checkout directly or choosing a different way to pay.

Where the rules don't apply

Order rules apply to every shopper, wholesale buyers included. They don't apply to orders that skip the shopper's checkout:

  • orders you create or edit yourself in Orders,
  • marketplace orders imported from other sales channels,
  • subscription renewals.

FAQ

Can I require a minimum for one product only?

Not yet. Order rules count the whole cart. A rule for a single product or category isn't available today.

Does a coupon count towards the minimum order value?

No. The minimum is checked against the subtotal before coupons, so a discount can't push an order below it.

Do shipping costs count?

No. Order value never includes delivery.

What if I set a minimum higher than the maximum?

The card won't save it and shows which limit to fix.
