Sell digital downloads
Attach files to a product so customers download them after purchase, with no shipping involved.
Ebooks, presets, templates, music, print-at-home patterns — anything you deliver as a file can be sold in your store. Attach the file to a product and buyers get it as soon as they've paid, with nothing for you to pack or post.
Attach files to a variant
Digital files are attached per variant, so you can sell the same product in different formats — a PDF and an EPUB, a low-res and a high-res pack — each as its own option.
- Open the product and go to its variants.
- Pick the variant you're attaching to.
- Upload the files that belong to it. A variant can carry more than one file.
Fill in the rest of the product exactly as you would for a physical one: a good name, a clear description, a cover image. Shoppers still buy with their eyes, even when there's nothing to hold — see Add a product.
Turn off shipping
Each variant has a Shippable setting, which controls whether it needs a shipping method and a delivery address at checkout. Switch it off for anything delivered as a file.
Tip: This is the step people forget. A digital product left as shippable asks the buyer for a postal address and can add a shipping charge to a download — an easy way to lose the sale at the last screen.
What the customer gets
Your product page tells shoppers it's a digital product and that they'll be able to download it after purchase. Once the order is paid, the files appear on their order page under Digital Assets, ready to download.
Mixing digital and physical
A store can sell both, and even a single product can have a digital variant alongside a physical one — a printed book and its ebook, say. Get the Shippable setting right on each variant and checkout handles the rest: a cart with only digital items skips shipping, while a mixed cart still collects an address for the physical part.
FAQ
Do I need to fulfill a digital order?
No. Once payment goes through, the buyer can download straight away. The order still appears in your orders so you have the record.
Can I sell more than one file as a single product?
Yes. A variant can carry several files — a bundle of presets, a pattern plus its instructions — and the buyer gets all of them.
Can I update a file after people have bought it?
Upload the new version to the variant and it's what future buyers get. Existing customers who need the update are worth emailing.
Do digital products need stock?
Not usually — a file doesn't run out. Leave stock unlimited unless you're deliberately selling a limited number of copies.
What about tax on digital goods?
Digital sales are taxed differently in many places, especially in the EU. Check Set up taxes and, if you sell across borders, take advice on the rules that apply.
