Offer bulk discounts with volume pricing
Set quantity-based price tiers so the per-unit price drops as customers buy more.
"Buy more, save more" is one of the oldest tricks in retail because it works. Volume pricing sets a lower per-unit price at higher quantities, so a shopper who was going to buy one often buys three.
How tiers work
A tier is a quantity range with its own price per unit.
| Min qty | Max qty | Price per unit |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 4 | $10.00 |
| 5 | 9 | $9.00 |
| 10 | ∞ | $8.00 |
Leave the maximum empty on your last tier and it runs to unlimited. The right price applies automatically at checkout, and the saving shows on the order as a Volume Discount.
Set it up
Open a product and find Volume Pricing. You'll need to save the product and add its variants first — tiers are built on top of them.
- Product-level tiers apply to every variant of the product. This is what most stores want.
- Per-variant overrides let one specific variant have its own tiers, for when a larger size shouldn't discount as steeply.
If you sell in more than one currency, there's a tab per currency. Add your tiers in the base currency first, then set the prices for the others — the quantity ranges are shared, only the prices differ.
Tip: Make the first tier easy to reach. A discount that starts at 3 units nudges far more shoppers than one that starts at 20, which most people will never hit.
What shoppers see
The product page shows a "Buy more, save more" breakdown with the price per unit at each quantity, so the saving is visible before they commit. The discount is then applied in the cart.
Choosing your tiers
- Protect your margin at the bottom. The lowest per-unit price still has to work for you.
- Two or three tiers is plenty. A long ladder is harder to read than a clear "5 for less, 10 for even less".
- Think about who buys in bulk — trade customers, gift buyers, people stocking up on a consumable. Set the thresholds where those buyers actually land.
FAQ
Does volume pricing stack with coupons?
Volume pricing changes the unit price, and coupons are applied to the order. Test the combination before you promote both at once so you know what a shopper actually ends up paying.
Is this the same as a bundle?
No. A bundle sells different products together at one price. Volume pricing discounts more of the same product — see Create product bundles.
Can I run volume pricing on only some products?
Yes. Tiers are set per product, so it applies only where you add them.
Why can't I see the Volume Pricing section?
Save the product and add its variants first. Tiers are configured against variants, so they can't be set on an unsaved product.
