Welcome offers & signup popups
Show a discount popup to new visitors and email every new subscriber a welcome code automatically.
A first-time visitor who leaves without buying is usually gone for good – unless you get their email. A signup popup with a small discount trades a modest first-order saving for a subscriber you can talk to again, which is one of the better deals in retail.
Two features work together here: the popup that collects the email, and the welcome discount that rewards it.
The newsletter popup
Enable Newsletter Popup in Settings → Modules, then open its settings.
Display
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Delay | How long to wait before the popup appears, from 0 to 300 seconds |
| Discount code | An optional code shown right after someone subscribes |
Content
| Field | Example |
|---|---|
| Heading | "Unlock 20% Off" |
| Subheading | "Subscribe to our newsletter and get an exclusive discount on your first order." |
| CTA button text | "Get My Discount" |
| Teaser button text | Shown after someone dismisses the popup, so they can still open it later |
| Image | An optional image on the left side of the popup |
Tip: Don't fire the popup instantly. Give visitors 15–30 seconds to see what you sell first – a popup that interrupts before anyone knows what your store is gets dismissed on reflex.
The welcome discount
The Welcome discount setting emails a discount code to every new subscriber – from the popup, from storefront signup forms, from ticking the newsletter box at checkout, and from the API. Turn it on and choose how codes are issued.
| Mode | How it works |
|---|---|
| Shared code | Everyone receives the same existing coupon code |
| Unique code per subscriber | A single-use code is generated for each person |
Shared codes are simpler, but they leak onto coupon sites and stop being exclusive. Unique codes are single-use and traceable back to the subscriber who earned them.
For unique codes you set a code prefix, the discount type (percentage or fixed amount), the value, and how many days each code stays valid.
Tip: Give the code an expiry. "20% off, valid for 14 days" converts far better than an open-ended offer nobody feels any need to use.
See the code someone was given
Open anyone under Subscribers and their detail panel shows the Welcome coupon they were issued – the code, its expiry date, and whether it's been used. It appears for unique codes only; a shared code belongs to no one in particular, so there's nothing per-subscriber to show.
Make the two work together
The popup promises the discount; the welcome email delivers it. Match the wording – if the popup says 20% off, the email had better contain a 20% code. Shared codes need a coupon to exist first, so create one under Coupons before you pick that mode.
FAQ
Won't a popup annoy people?
A badly timed one will. A popup that waits a bit, offers something genuinely worth having, and can be dismissed cleanly is generally welcomed – and the teaser button means anyone who dismissed it can come back.
Is the discount code shown on screen or emailed?
Both, depending on your setup: the popup can show a code straight after signup, and the welcome discount emails one. Showing it on screen and emailing it means nobody loses it.
Can I run this without the popup?
Yes. The welcome discount applies to anyone who subscribes, however they signed up – popup, storefront form, checkout, or API. A shopper who was already unsubscribed doesn't get resurrected just by an earlier email address matching, though – the offer only fires for a genuinely new opt-in.
Can I see who came in through the popup?
Yes. Subscribers are tagged with the source they signed up through, and you can filter the list by Popup – see Send newsletters & grow subscribers.
Where do I create the coupon for a shared code?
Under Coupons – see Create coupons & discounts.
