Let YNS manage your DNS
Move your domain's DNS to YNS so your store records are set up and kept up to date for you. You change nameservers once, and there's nothing else to maintain.
Normally, to connect your own domain you add a few DNS records at the company where you bought it, and you look after them yourself – see Connect a custom domain. With managed DNS, YNS hosts your domain's DNS for you on Cloudflare instead. We copy your existing records, add the ones your store needs and keep them correct from then on.
Your only job is to change your domain's nameservers once, at your registrar.
Note: Managed DNS is being rolled out gradually. If you don't see Move your domain to YNS in Settings → Domains, it isn't available for your store yet – reach us through Get help and support if you'd like it.
Is it right for you?
Managed DNS is a good fit if:
- You'd rather not copy DNS records by hand or fix them when something changes.
- Your domain is used mostly or only for your store.
Think twice if you rely heavily on your current provider's DNS for other things – email, other websites on subdomains, or tools that need verification records. Those can be moved too, but only the records you bring across keep working (more on that below).
What changes when YNS manages your DNS
- Your DNS moves to YNS. Once your nameservers point to us, the internet asks YNS – not your old provider – where your domain lives.
- Records at your old provider stop counting. They're still visible in your old provider's panel, but nobody reads them any more. Changing them has no effect. Only the records copied to YNS keep working.
- Your domain stays yours. You keep the domain registered where you bought it and keep paying for it there. Only the DNS moves.
- Store records stay correct on their own. When you publish your store or roll back a version, YNS updates the records itself.
Before you start
You'll need:
- The domain you want to move, for example
yourbrand.comorshop.yourbrand.com. - Your login at the registrar – the company where you bought the domain. Changing nameservers happens there, and we can't do it for you.
- About ten minutes, plus waiting for the nameserver change – usually 1–24 hours, sometimes up to 48.
Caution: Any record we don't copy stops working after the switch. That includes email (MX, SPF, DKIM, DMARC), subdomains and verification records for tools like Google Search Console. Keep your old provider's DNS page open so you can compare it with what YNS finds.
Move your domain
In your dashboard open Settings → Domains and click Move my domain. If your domain is already connected the regular way, the card is called Move yourbrand.com to YNS-managed DNS. The wizard has four steps.
1. Domain
Type the exact address your store should open on, for example yourbrand.com or shop.yourbrand.com, and click Add domain and check records.
2. Check records
YNS reads the records currently set up for your domain and lists them under Records we found. Every record is ticked, which means it will be copied.
- Compare the list with your old provider's DNS page.
- Untick anything you don't want to bring across. Unticked records stop working once you change nameservers.
- Choose The list is complete, or Some records are missing – I will add them myself after the move if something you need isn't listed.
- Click Continue.
If a record is missing, click Scan again first – sometimes it just needs a second look.
3. Confirm
YNS shows the Records we will add to point your domain at your store. If your domain currently points somewhere else, for example an old website, you'll see Existing records will be replaced with a before and after. Tick the box to confirm, then click Add records and continue.
4. Nameservers
The last step happens at your registrar. YNS shows you two nameservers.
- Click Copy both.
- Log in where you bought the domain.
- Open the domain's Nameservers or DNS settings.
- Choose custom nameservers, remove the old ones and paste the two from YNS.
- Save.
Caution: If DNSSEC is turned on for your domain at the registrar, turn it off before you change nameservers. Otherwise your domain stops working.
You can close the page now. YNS keeps checking in the background and switches management on as soon as it sees the new nameservers. Click Check now if you don't want to wait for the next check. When it's done, the page says DNS for yourbrand.com is managed by YNS.
After the move
There's nothing to maintain. Secure https is set up automatically, and your store records stay correct when you publish.
You can't edit records yourself in YNS. If you need one later – for example to set up email on your domain or a new subdomain – reach us through Get help and support and we'll add it.
Cancel the move
You can cancel any time before you change nameservers: open the move on Settings → Domains and click Cancel move. YNS removes your domain from its DNS, and everything stays exactly as it was at your old provider.
Once you've changed nameservers, cancelling isn't enough – your domain would have no DNS at all. To go back to your old provider, contact us first so we can plan it with you.
If something goes wrong
- It's been more than a day. Check that you saved the new nameservers at your registrar and removed the old ones. Some registrars need you to confirm the change by email.
- The nameservers weren't changed within 7 days. YNS stops waiting. Change them at your registrar, then click Check now.
- "This domain is already set up in another Cloudflare account." Your domain is already on Cloudflare, under someone else's account – maybe yours, or a previous web agency's. Remove it there first, then try again.
- Email stopped working after the move. An email record wasn't copied. Contact us with the records your email provider asks for and we'll add them.
- Anything else. Click Try again, or reach us through Get help and support.
FAQ
Do I need a Cloudflare account?
No. YNS runs the Cloudflare side for you. You never sign in to Cloudflare.
Do I have to transfer my domain to YNS?
No. Your domain stays registered where you bought it. Only DNS moves.
Will my store go offline during the move?
Not if the record list is complete. YNS copies your records before you change nameservers, so the old and new DNS give the same answers while the change spreads.
Can YNS change the nameservers for me?
No. Nameservers are set at your registrar, and only you can sign in there.
What's the difference from connecting a domain myself?
When you connect a domain yourself, DNS stays at your provider and you look after the records. With managed DNS, YNS hosts DNS and looks after the records for you. See Connect a custom domain.
What's next
- Connect a domain the regular way: Connect a custom domain.
- Make sure your store is ready: Publish and go live.
