How does Stripe calculate fees?
Stripe charges a base rate (percentage + fixed fee per transaction) that varies by country. In the US it's 2.9% + $0.30. In the UK it's 1.5% + £0.20. These rates apply to standard domestic card transactions.
Two additional fees can apply: international cards (cards issued outside your country) add 1.5%, and currency conversion (when Stripe converts the charge currency) adds 1%. These stack on top of the base rate.
At scale, the fixed per-transaction fee matters a lot. On a $5 sale, $0.30 represents 6% of the transaction. On a $200 sale, it's only 0.15%. Higher average order values dramatically reduce your effective Stripe rate.
