Card payments through [Stripe](/help/payments/connect-stripe) aren't the only way to get paid. You can also let shoppers pay you directly – by bank transfer, by a manual method like Interac e-Transfer, or in cash to the courier when the order arrives. Both options work **with or without Stripe**, so a club, association or small shop that doesn't want a card provider can still take orders through checkout.

You'll find both under **Settings → Payments**, below the Stripe card, in two sections: **Bank transfer** and **Cash on delivery**.

## How they appear at checkout

| Your setup | What shoppers see at checkout |
|------------|-------------------------------|
| **Stripe connected + bank transfer and/or cash on delivery on** | Your card payment methods as usual, with the manual options as extra choices below them |
| **No Stripe (or other payment provider), bank transfer on** | Bank transfer is the payment method |
| **No Stripe, bank transfer and cash on delivery on** | The shopper picks between the two |

Either way, the order is placed **unpaid** and you mark it paid once the money reaches you.

## Bank transfer

Turn on **Offer bank transfer at checkout** and fill in your details:

| Field | What it does |
|-------|--------------|
| **Bank account number** | Where shoppers send the money. Required to switch bank transfer on |
| **Bank name** | Optional – the name of your bank |
| **Transfer title hint** | Optional. The order number is always used as the transfer title; this adds an extra instruction, e.g. "include your company name" |
| **Extra instructions** | Optional – shown at checkout and in the payment email |
| **Payment deadline (days)** | How long the shopper has to pay, from 1 to 60 days. The default is 7 |
| **Payment method name** | Optional – replaces "Bank transfer" everywhere shoppers see it, e.g. "Interac e-Transfer" |
| **Account label** | Optional – replaces "Account number" everywhere shoppers see it, e.g. "Send to" |

### Use it for Interac e-Transfer and other manual methods

Bank transfer isn't limited to bank accounts. Any method where the shopper sends money to you by hand works the same way – put the email address or handle in the **Bank account number** field and rename the method so shoppers recognize it.

For example, to accept **Interac e-Transfer** in Canada:

1. Turn on **Offer bank transfer at checkout**.
2. Enter your e-Transfer email address in **Bank account number**.
3. Set **Payment method name** to `Interac e-Transfer`.
4. Set **Account label** to `Send to`.
5. Optionally add **Extra instructions**, e.g. "Put the order number in the message."

Shoppers then see "Interac e-Transfer" at checkout and in their payment email, with your email address under "Send to" instead of a bank account number. The same works for Venmo, Zelle and similar "send money to" apps – use the handle or email they pay to.

### What the shopper sees

1. They choose bank transfer (or your renamed method) at checkout and place the order. The payment details are shown right there.
2. The order is created **unpaid**, and they get an email with the payment details, the amount and the payment deadline.
3. They send the money from their own bank or app, using the order number as the transfer title.

### What you do

1. Watch your bank account or app for the payment.
2. When it arrives, open the order and click **Mark as paid**. The shopper then gets their order confirmation email.
3. Fulfill and ship the order as usual – see [Fulfill and ship an order](/help/orders/fulfill-and-ship).

If the money doesn't arrive in time, the order is **cancelled automatically** after the payment deadline, its items go back into stock, and you get an email letting you know.

> **Note:** Bank transfer isn't offered for subscription products. Subscriptions renew automatically, so they need a card – see [Sell subscriptions](/help/products/product-subscriptions).

> **Tip:** Keep the deadline short enough that stock isn't held for long, but long enough for a transfer to clear. A week suits most bank transfers; e-Transfers usually arrive within minutes, so a shorter deadline works fine.

## Cash on delivery

Turn on **Offer cash on delivery at checkout** and, if you like, add **Instructions for buyers** – for example "Please have the exact amount ready." They're shown when a shopper chooses cash on delivery at checkout. Like bank transfer, it works without a card payment provider connected.

Cash on delivery is only offered when:

- The cart has something to deliver – physical, shippable items.
- The cart has no subscriptions.

When a shopper picks it, the order is placed **unpaid** and they get the order confirmation right away, with your instructions. There's no payment deadline – the courier collects the money on delivery. Once the money reaches you, open the order and click **Mark as paid**.

> **Note:** With GLS, cash on delivery is only available for courier delivery to the door in Poland, in PLN – not for parcel shops or lockers. See [Ship with Polish carriers](/help/shipping/carriers-poland).

## Refunds

There's no payment provider to send the money back for you. Refund the shopper yourself from your own bank account or app, then set the order status to **Refunded** so your records match. See [Issue refunds and handle returns](/help/orders/refunds-and-returns).

## FAQ

### Do I need Stripe to take orders?

No. With bank transfer or cash on delivery switched on, shoppers can check out and place orders without Stripe or any other payment provider. You only need Stripe for card payments, wallets like Apple Pay, subscriptions, or [automatic tax](/help/payments/taxes).

### Can I accept Interac e-Transfer?

Yes. Turn on bank transfer, put your e-Transfer email in **Bank account number**, and set **Payment method name** to "Interac e-Transfer" and **Account label** to "Send to". Shoppers see e-Transfer at checkout and in their payment email.

### Can I offer bank transfer alongside card payments?

Yes. With Stripe connected, bank transfer and cash on delivery show up as extra options below the card payment methods.

### How do I know an order is still waiting for payment?

It stays unpaid until you click **Mark as paid** on the order. Bank transfer orders that aren't paid by the deadline are cancelled and restocked automatically, and you're emailed when that happens.

### When does the shopper get their order confirmation?

For bank transfer, once you mark the order paid – before that they have the payment-details email. For cash on delivery, straight after they place the order.

### Should I ship a bank transfer order before it's paid?

Wait until the money arrives and you've marked it paid. Cash on delivery is the exception – you ship it unpaid and the courier collects the payment.
